ICC Champions Trophy 2025 - Current (realistic) State of Hosting Grounds

Gaddafi Stadium right now going through massive upgradation, although too little too late, because anything which remains during the tournament, would definitely bring disgrace to Pakistan as hosts, as currently this tournament is hybrid-ly hosted by Pakistan and the UAE (Dubai stadium to be precisely)

Country should have had come first instead of self

Champions Trophy is going to initiated from February 2025
but just view it is 28th December, 2024; and still NBCS is
in grey structures
Because if country was priority, they would had initiated upgradation during Ramiz Raja tenure, instead they (the PCB) wasted massive time, (India is just taking advantage, but it should be confessed that India benefitted from us), I personally felt, Pakistan should have reacted the time (2021), things must have been much better instead of last minute haphazard upgradation, on the contrary, India at the time of 2011 Cricket World Cup, started renovation of their cricketing grounds at 2008, including Wankhede and Chennai, while Pakistan was hosting Asia Cup 2008, where after this tournament, hosting rights of Pakistan from ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 were taken away from Pakistan, but still Pakistan didn't learn from their mistakes.

We are good in pointing fingers

This is a case of generational critique that focuses on blaming others rather than learning from past mistakes and committing to continuous improvement. It highlights a tendency toward narcissism, which hinders the support and promotion of junior members in various contexts.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 - and Pakistani media شعبدے بازی

As I have mentioned in one of my previous blog posts, media, especially Pakistani media has been responsible for creating this mess, because while reports are being released regarding Mohsin Naqvi Sahab's visit to Dubai regarding the ICC meeting, end up face-saving because he is not only PCB's chief but also part of a political party currently ruling Pakistan, has an excuse for creating a goodwill for him in Pakistan.

Although I might be sounding like an Indian, but...

I agree with one of the Indian anchors that after 1996, how many multi-national tournaments have we hosted? apart from the recently coming NZ and South Africa tri-nation series? I personally observed a lack of intention from Pakistan, although there is an excuse that from 2009 to 2019, Pakistan couldn't host a game on its soil, but still, related to South Africa's apartheid, they invested in their infrastructure, did we reciprocate accordingly? and worked on our infrastructure? I remember India started upgrading their majority stadiums for the 2011 ICC CWC in 2008, whereas we started 4 months ago, whereas today's first of December, so it is evident that we Pakistanis only believe in شعبدے بازی instead of constructive criticism

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 - and Pakistan's lack of counterpropaganda

India has consistently provided reasons for Pakistan not hosting an ICC event on its soil. While this may seem like standard procedure, it highlights a lack of long-term planning that should have been addressed much earlier. I find myself partially agreeing with some Indian broadcasters who attribute this situation to the ICC’s mismanagement. As one broadcaster pointed out, should any damage occur, it would fall under the ICC's responsibility. They question if Pakistan, even if it manages to navigate these challenges, will be able to develop its cricket facilities on time.

In today's world, the state of cricket stadiums is crucial for showcasing a country’s cricket infrastructure. It's disheartening that in 2024, we are still debating the viewing experiences within our cricket stadiums. Meanwhile, in South Africa, fans thoroughly enjoy their time at the cricketing venues, reflecting a more advanced and fan-friendly infrastructure.

Promoting their cricket

Iqbal stadium, in Faisalabad
Cricket stadiums are crucial for showcasing a nation's cricketing capabilities on the global stage. The
recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India is a testament to this, as India successfully demonstrated its cricketing prowess through its world-class stadiums. It is noteworthy that India's infrastructure is so advanced that if the BCCI were to host CWC games at every international-standard stadium, each venue might only get a single game due to the sheer number of high-quality options available.

In stark contrast, Pakistan's situation highlights significant infrastructural shortcomings. We have only a handful of international-standard stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Faisalabad. This limited number underscores the urgent need for Pakistan to invest in and expand its cricketing infrastructure to meet international standards and improve its standing on the global cricket stage.

PSL 2022 - What about the Kings?

This PSL have been little different in approaching, because even last year PSL, its digital commercial activity initiated well before month, but this time, although I was watching on-roads advertisement and renovation on National Stadium Karachi, but none of it was national media, keeping in mind the official theme was released 4 days before the tournament started, but today's blog post is not about how PSL started, but the way home team i.e. Karachi Kings have been playing like they have forgot how to play.

Take Example of Yesterday's game between them and Quetta Gladiators

This was second of the double header played on the same deck where Lahore Qalandars scored 206 whereas Multan Sultans end up scoring 209 to clinch the day game, but when floodlights lit, situation turned on its head, although taking nothing away from the performance of Naseem Shah, because the line and the length he incorporated; was exceptional, it is just the matter of continuation that how is he going to sustain that form and that confidence; but the way Karachi Kings gifted the wickets, was not up to the expectations from the hosts, as the game is being played in Karachi, furthermore it is also broadcasting partner along with PTV Sports, i.e. A Sports, hence this is ridiculous performance from the so called hosts; who have been granted most of the prime time matches, and hence during the prime time games, we are granted with such ridiculous performance.

Statistically speaking

If you go through the image at left, two thing we are going to note, initially Karachi couldn't play their full quota of 120 balls, furthermore the number of dot balls Karachi consumed is ridiculous, although again taking nothing out of Naseem Shah as the lad did bowl on the right positions, but the same goes with Karachi's batting as they were unable to rotate strikes, instead of every one was looking to strike hard and winning cash award, instead of playing sensibly, where by sensibly I mean rotating the strike and do not create a scoreboard pressure on batters to come, which as per mentioned image, Karachi lost because Naseem Shah took wickets and because of that every one tried to Yuvraj 2007 themselves, because of that Karachi did mockery of themselves, because they are now on the bottom of the table, and their NRR is way below the one second last on the table, means they'd have to win 3 games with bigger margin.

What am I saying

As per match standings after conclusion of Peshawar v Islamabad game, Karachi is on the bottom position, where Karachi's NRR on -1.099, therefore Karachi has to win games like Islamabad did, like winning with more balls to spare, otherwise bowling  their opponents out inside the target while balls remaining, otherwise by the time tournament would be touching on semi final stages, Karachi might lag down due to NRR, hence it is important for Karachi to win their today's game against Lahore, which is a Do or Die game for the hosts of Karachi leg of PSL.

Dismal performance

This is a predictive forecaster on Karachi's scoring rates per over, where after Naseem Shah's onslaught, Karachi couldn't recover from the same, because even the forecaster was showing Karachi's scoring rate was declining as the play progressed, otherwise ridiculous display of cricket from Karachi as instead of rotating the strike on continuous, they opted to go for the bang-bang methodology.

Temperament disorder

This phase wise performance of Karachi team clearly exposes their strategy of taking the ball to the 120th ball, because if game was taken to the penultimate ball of their inning, it would definitely helped for the cause, because the game is being played in Karachi, where pitches are being belter, hence playing on these pitches mean you'll have to play with strategy, where stress should be laid on stopping leakage of runs, because this is the way, teams cope with such scenarios.

Phase wise runs distribution

Even if we distribute runs scoring with respect to the phase wise, Karachi's run rate couldn't touch 8 runs per over mark, just because if we go through below mentioned image, the mid portion of the innings was responsible for decline, furthermore fall of wickets hampered their run scoring but carelessness from Karachi; as their batters stopped rotating the strikes and instead of stealing the runs off the opposition, they empowered their opposition.

Karachi doesn't deserve to be in eliminators

Because such pathetic performances, Karachi doesn't deserve to be in eliminators, because I personally feel; the eliminators should be competed between two evenly poised teams, but such tragedy poised performing team should not be allowed to be played in eliminators or even qualifiers, as this is PSL's reputation at stake.

The Itinerary

The itinerary of this PSL has been pathetic, even if due to on going pandemic situation if Lahore's game be played in Lahore and Karachi games in Karachi, whereas Eliminators and Qualifier be played in Rawalpindi, this could also have been arranged with respect COVID-19 restrictions but still some excitement could have been managed, because not every city might be watching a particular game only, you might not agree with my assessment but I personally feel that if games simultaneously be played in Lahore and Karachi, maybe your target audience might be divided but it'll give your target audience a chance to view more like games instead of current itinerary which do not give choice to watch your like game at all.

For Instance

Let me describe my point with respect to current target audience, which is very similar to recently concluded World Cup T20 2021, when it could be arranged and managed there (in UAE) than it could have been managed in Pakistan as well.

Let Me Describe

If Islamabad is playing Lahore in Lahore and Multan is playing Quetta in Karachi; this means two games simultaneously at two different venues, and if these are two day games and in evening other four teams play, it'd generate more crowd in our cricket grounds, and furthermore it'd generated more interest in streaming services, which would be more interesting for the 'target audience'.

We need to educate our target audience as well instead of following something which is already being followed somewhere else

This is my own personal opinion, so one might disagree with my point of view; but I personally feel that instead of following a trend, we require to incorporate something new like that where we give our target audience an option to confirm ownership of the team which I guess should be the priority, instead of one venue at a time which would downgrade the interest of this league, being a Pakistani, I'd like to have this PSL to thrive, and this is something I feel would benefit PSL for sure.

West Indies reached Karachi, but...

West Indies squad have reached Karachi, which is a good thing for both Pakistan and for Cricket, as two mercurial teams are going to compete against each other in two of the formats well suited to both of them, whereas Pakistan hosting a complete T20 and ODI series on Karachi soil.

But

As I have been advocate of staging more games on to other centers like Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar (when ready and available), Multan etc.;

Why I am saying this

I have been saying this because of my psychological aspects;

Think Internationally

We are bad at marketing and are worst of marketers, because read my words whilst having open and broad mindset, as whenever International Cricket is arranged in a particular country, they DO MAKE such arrangements just like Pakistan currently doing, but I am acting like thinking differently, because today's era is of broadcast, and the broadcaster buys country's cricket series' with respect to its demand and demand depends on perception, and perception is created upon what YOU'RE showing to them; and now think about when we're showing them that foreign players when landing into Pakistan, are being escorted bordering security personnel, although this is a norm even in countries like Australia and England but they don't show their security personnel, although their (security personnel contribution) should be appreciated, but not in that manner, the way PCB Social Media have been bragging,

We Require to Show Pakistan a Safe country but not like that

Because just like I mentioned above, this is all about psychological and perception creation and modification, because again, every country makes sufficient arrangements, when an International Team visits them, but if their national board starts showing foreign players being escorted in tight security, again I must confess, not saying our security personnel are doing average job, but whatever we show them (international viewers) creates a perception, and perception is responsible for creating a FALSE REALITY, and my query is with all of them (the foreigners who have visited Pakistan), whatever perception foreigners have about Pakistan, reality in Pakistan is totally different.

Not Talking about Politics and Geo-Political issues hampering Pakistan's perception

The recent events conducted at Sialkot does hampered reputation of Pakistan and its economy, hence this is the high time, Pakistan should emphasize perception creation first, even if they want some reels for Instagram Stories, they should show enthusiasm of our crowd who love cricket and cricketer and chanting banners for appreciation of foreign players instead of showing, airing and broadcasting videos of foreign players being escorted in tight security, again a subtle disclaimer, that not saying reduce security, but don't create a false perception of Pakistan in the minds of those foreigners who have not visited Pakistan and instead installing a pre-installed fear installed into their sub-conscious mind.

We should look into Bangladesh's approach

The way they (the Bangladeshi Cricket Board) promoted this image, because it literally gave subtle invitation to those people to visit Bangladesh, who have not, because this is the way modern promotion of (cricketing) economies are done.

Just another day at Multan

This is really heartening to see the amount of crowd in Multan came to support the home team i.e. Multan Sultans, which really played like a Sultan and slowly they have touched the top of the table of the HBL PSL league as of February 28th, 2020.
Group Standings after #MSvKK game conclusion
But the talk of the town in the amount of crowd came to support not Multan but the arrival of cricket in Pakistan, which is really something we missed a lot from our stadiums, apart from that, a decade of exile from staging home games at home taught us a lesson, that home games matter and because of that, now we are treating tests played in our own cities important enough so that Rawalpindi games are almost full stadiums, because if a stadium of 25000 capacity is filled in between 10000 to 15000, than according to the Pakistan Standard with respect to the test matches is deemed to be filled.
As expected, thirsty stadiums of Multan and Rawalpindi proved they can stage more games within their territory i.e. their stadiums

T20 games

T20 games aren't exceptions as these games do require crowds to have interests in the game, and that is what we've seen at Multan and Rawalpindi, therefore for the time being, the PCB should stage their home T20I games shuffling in between Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi, and furthermore develop some more venues like currently they are with Peshawar and in the mean time Rafi Cricket Stadium at Karachi which is expected to seat 50000 capacity and is supposed to be largest cricket stadium with respect to seating capacity in Pakistan, would also be completed and therefore like Mumbai, Colombo and Dhaka, Karachi will also be another city where there would be two international cricketing venues available.

Expected South Africa's tour to Pakistan

Reports/rumours are erupting that the Proteas are expected and interested in touring Pakistan before their tour to India, means after the conclusion of Bangladesh tour to Pakistan, there is a break of ten days where they have managed to include this series where they'd play a T20I series in Pakistan. But again as I included in my previous post, are our infrastructure capable of handling such ventures? Except of Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore a.k.a. GSL, none of the stadiums in Pakistan meet-up with the standard, because the major cricketing fraternity has gone towards electronic scoreboards and electronic advertisements, and here we're staging the tours on manual advertisements, thanks to the Almighty Allah at least we're using at-least Electronic Scoreboards for signaling outs from the third umpire panels, otherwise I remember during SL tour to Pakistan in 2009 which was actually the last tour before the 2019 tour of the same country few months ago, we were still using red, yellow and green lights at that time when even in Sharjah Stadium I remember the electronic and digital scoreboard was used to show the decision. Therefore in order to generate market interest for the production teams to have the Pakistan cricket as innovative and ambitious cricket production package, we require to take these steps seriously in order to rejuvenate the interest of the game in the country, because THIS is the responsibility of the PCB to make sure, because this is what they've been paid for.
