Franchise Cricket: Dunes League T20 on Grand Slam format

Another T20 league?

This is unlike PSL, IPL or any other T20 league, Saudi Arabia is set to host its first franchise league later this year, with the 'Dunes League T20' due to launch in October. The league has been sanctioned by the Saudi Arabia Cricket Federation (SACF) and is expected to feature players who have recently retired from international cricket but remain active on the franchise circuit.

Over the past few years, the Saudi Arabian Sports Fund has invested in many other sports like football, F1, and even combat sports like MMA, Wrestling, and KickBoxing.

The Dunes Legends League T20 aims to continue to position the Kingdom on the global cricket map while aligning with Vision 2030 objectives — promoting sports tourism, expanding private-sector participation, and developing new revenue streams through cricket. The league will serve as a key platform for nurturing local talent and increasing the sport’s visibility across Saudi cities.

By hosting the competition in various cities, the organizers aim to promote sports tourism and community interaction while simultaneously giving Saudi cricketers access to professional-level training and exposure alongside international stars.

Yuvraj Singh as brand ambassador

In an official statement posted to their X account, the Dunes T20 League said that former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh had been signed on as League Ambassador.

The new league is set to be run in a partnership between the South Asian Network Ltd., the Unique Sports Group, the Prolithic Talent Agency, and the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation.

The statement said that the league is set to be launched in October 2026 as a six-team tournament.

Analysis

There have been widespread rumours over the last three years that Saudi Arabia would disrupt cricket by launching a T20 league to rival the IPL, with further speculation last year about potential investment in a 'Grand Slam-style' circuit of T20 leagues floated by the Australian Cricketers' Association.

In practice, Saudi Arabia's entry into the cricketing world has been gradual, via sponsorship deals with the ICC and staging the IPL auction in 2024. The SACF also partnered with the UAE's ILT20 last year and has signed a long-term agreement to stage the FairBreak Women's T20 Challenge, though the first edition has been postponed due to conflict in the Gulf region.

In their official statement, the league said that legends of the game were set to be involved and that the league was launched with the idea of growing the game in the region.

"South Asian Network Ltd, in partnership with Unique Sports Group, Prolithic Talent Agency, and the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation, is proud to announce the launch of the Dunes T20 League in Saudi Arabia, set to launch in October 2026, with legends of the international game set to be involved."

Cricket icon Yuvraj Singh joins the league as an Ambassador as the Dunes T20 League aims to accelerate the growth of cricket across the region, create opportunities for emerging and established local players, and deliver a world-class sporting and entertainment product to global audiences."

"This marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for cricket in Saudi Arabia and the wider region," the league said.
